Round 2

Ding! Ding! Ding!

ironhead 77 rear piston

Back into the engine, taking the back head apart I found the same damage as the front had to the piston and jug. Only the damage was on the opposite side. She had produced a 30 on the leakdown when I had done the front. Yet now she was up to a 35+ right at the edge of the green.

Based off the condition of the front head, I was taking it apart either way. When I had got the parts for the front head had ordered what I could individually. I had most of the pieces I needed already and only had to order some more gaskets and the valves cause of the 4 packs.

I went through and followed the same lapping that I did to the first one even tho I had all the parts I wanted to make all the parts have an even wear pattern and to keep the pattern going from the front head. So I lapped it with the old valves before moving to the new. Just as go through the grades of sand paper to cut the shine out.

While I had the back head down, I went thought the same as the first shining everything. This time removing black paint from the top of the head besides the years of pitting.

Found on the front piston that bent tip screw driver and a punch work well to get the flat springs out.. Then using your nail to press it back into place with the pin to give it a backing.

Ordered an adaptive honer tool. The bore wasn't that scratched So I gave it a nice cross pattern. The tool worked nice. Hooked it up to a drill and tapped the jug to the bench. I had never done this before the fron jug yet it wasm't too difficult to figure out this time even easier. Making sure to keep the spinning motion through out the jug, had heard a lot of people breaking the stones. I had no trouble with this by slowing down

Putting the piston back into the jug used the aircraft hose clamp method and it worked really well. The piston rings came in a sleeve showing the order and wich sides to face them.. Took the old ring bits and put them in circles to make sure we had all the parts carfully covering the hole as took the jug on and off.
